MER calculator — marketing efficiency ratio
Calculate blended marketing efficiency from total business revenue and total marketing spend, with optional new-customer revenue and gross-margin context.
MER = total business revenue ÷ total marketing spendMER is a blended efficiency measure, not proof that marketing caused every sale. Use finance-system revenue and a consistent definition of total marketing spend.
How to use the result
MER gives one blended view across the marketing system.
Marketing efficiency ratio compares total business revenue with total marketing spend for the same period. It avoids assigning every sale to one platform, but it does not prove incrementality or profitability. Document which marketing costs and revenue sources are included before comparing periods.

How to calculate MER
Divide total business revenue by total marketing spend across the same reporting period. A 5× MER means the business recorded five units of revenue for every one unit of marketing spend.
MER = total business revenue ÷ total marketing spendMarketing efficiency ratio example
A business records 500,000 in total revenue and 100,000 in marketing spend. Its MER is 5× and marketing spend equals 20% of revenue. At a 60% gross margin, gross contribution after marketing is 200,000 before overhead and other costs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using platform-attributed revenue instead of total business revenue without labelling the change.
- Including agency and creative costs in one month but excluding them in the comparison month.
- Calling MER profit when product costs, fulfilment, salaries, tax and overhead remain unaccounted for.
- Assuming all revenue was caused by current-period marketing or comparing periods with different seasonality.
Frequently asked questions
MER calculator — marketing efficiency ratio FAQs
What does MER mean in marketing?
MER means marketing efficiency ratio. It compares total business revenue with total marketing spend across a consistent period.
How is MER calculated?
Divide total revenue by total marketing spend. Revenue of 120,000 divided by spend of 30,000 produces a 4× MER.
What is the difference between MER and ROAS?
ROAS normally evaluates attributed revenue against advertising spend for a campaign or platform. MER uses total business revenue and blended marketing spend across the wider system.
What costs should be included in marketing spend?
Choose and document a consistent definition. It may include paid media, agency fees, creative production, software, affiliates, influencers and other directly related marketing costs.
What is a good MER?
There is no universal target. The sustainable threshold depends on gross margin, operating costs, repeat purchasing, cash flow and growth objectives. Compare MER with a calculated break-even point and business plan.
