Define what the website must achieve
A website cannot optimise equally for every goal. Decide whether the primary action is a phone call, quotation request, booking, purchase, application or store visit. Secondary actions can support people who are not ready, but the main journey should remain obvious.
Describe the most valuable customer in practical terms: the problem they need solved, what triggers the search, what they worry about and what evidence they require. This is more useful than a vague audience such as 'all small businesses'.
Set a baseline before the redesign. Record current organic enquiries, conversion rate, important rankings, page speed and sales feedback. Without a baseline, a more attractive site may feel successful while its commercial impact remains unclear.
Create a page plan based on customer intent
The homepage should orient visitors, not carry every detail. Give each important service a dedicated page when the audience, process or buying questions differ. Add About and Contact pages that reduce uncertainty, and use guides to answer deeper research questions.
Map one main purpose to each page. A web design service page can address outcomes, process, timing, cost factors and examples. A location page can explain how delivery works in that market. Avoid several pages competing to answer the same question.
Plan navigation and internal links at the same time. Every important page should be reachable through ordinary links, not only a site search or sitemap. Related articles should point readers toward the relevant service without forcing a sales pitch into every paragraph.
Prepare the content and proof
Clear copy is part of the product. Write the core proposition, service explanations and calls to action before polishing decorative details. Use the customer's language and explain unfamiliar terms. Replace unsupported superlatives with evidence.
Gather project examples, testimonials, certifications, team information and process details. Obtain permission to use client names and images. If strong photography is unavailable, plan a focused shoot or use a restrained visual system rather than filling the site with generic stock images.
Confirm factual details in one place: phone numbers, email addresses, service areas, social links and legal information. Inconsistencies reduce trust and become harder to correct after the same detail appears across many pages.
- Approved logo files and colour references
- Service descriptions and customer questions
- Real project outcomes and testimonials
- Team biographies and contact information
- Photography rights and source files
Design for trust, speed and action
A distinctive brand does not require a complicated interface. Strong hierarchy, readable type, purposeful colour and consistent spacing make a site feel considered. On mobile, content order and tap targets matter more than desktop effects.
Performance should be designed in from the start. Large media, unnecessary scripts and heavy animation can make an elegant page frustrating. Optimise images, limit third-party tools and test real devices and slower connections.
Accessibility improves usability for everyone. Use semantic headings, descriptive links, labels, keyboard-friendly controls and sufficient contrast. Do not rely on colour alone to communicate meaning or hide important information inside interactions that are difficult to operate.
Plan the launch and the next ninety days
Before launch, test forms, phone links, analytics, redirects, metadata, index settings and key journeys. Preserve valuable old URLs with redirects rather than allowing them to disappear. Check how social sharing previews look and ensure the sitemap reflects the final page set.
Agree who owns the domain, hosting, analytics and website accounts. Keep access with the business, not only the supplier. Record how updates are requested, what support includes and how backups or deployments are handled.
Treat launch as the beginning of measurement. Review search visibility, enquiries and customer feedback during the first month. Fix friction, expand pages that attract qualified demand and add articles based on real sales questions. A useful website improves as the business learns.
